NAIROBI, KENYA — It’s another accolade for Nanaimo-born hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg.

The reigning Olympic gold medalist added to his trophy cabinet with gold at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday, May 31.

The 23-year-old Katzberg won the men’s title with a throw of 82.73 metres.

Croatia’s Matija Greguric finished in second with a throw of 76.68 metres, while Hungary’s Daniel Raba was third at 75.93 metres.

Katzberg also won the event – which is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour – last year with a throw of 84.38 metres.

He also finished second in 2023 with a bid of 76.38 metres.

In addition to his gold medal in Paris last year, Katzberg was also named Canadian Press Male Athlete of the Year.

He was celebrated in Nanaimo in September 2024 with the Nanaimo Track and Field Club announcing they’re renaming the hammer throw cage at Rotary Bowl after Katzberg in honour of his exceptional achievements.

Katzberg, who grew up in Nanaimo’s Chase River area and graduated from John Barsby Secondary, now trains in Kamloops.
